Hands-on in Hurst, January 24 - 2010

In January fifteen club members attended an all-day, hands-on turning session, kindly hosted by Richard Maynard at his workshop in Hurst. With five lathes and other tools such as bandsaw and sharpeners available everyone had the chance to try something.

The aim was for more experienced turners to pass on their knowledge to the less experienced, covering the following aspects:

  • General tool control
  • Spindle turning
  • Deep hollowing
  • Thin turning of wet wood
  • Off centre turning
  • Tool sharpening

Soon after arrival the members had sorted themselves into small groups, which stayed together for most of the day, giving an excellent opportunity for extended exchange of knowledge and skills, spurred on by a liberal supply of tea, coffee, biscuits and bacon sarnies.

Bill discusses procedures for deep hollowing with Claire and Peter then watches as theory is put into practice

Jim and John collaborate to produce a natural-edge, deep hollowed green-wood bud vase

Harvey demonstrates spindle turning for a candlestick - later Tony makes a matching pair.

Nigel leads the thin turning group with Dan and Chris in attendance

Gerry keeps the chisels sharp

Tony and Peter enjoy a joke, while our chairman sits it out

The session was atttended by Bill Riley, Brian Attewell, Chris Cox, Clare Keane, Gerry England, Harvey Grimwood, Jim Coombs, John Chance, Nigel Griffiths, Peter Turner, Dan Turner, Tony Nottridge, Peter Richard and Alan Harley - all of whom express their thanks to Richard for what was a technically and socially rewarding day.
