Exhibition Reading Civic Centre - April 3rd to May 1st
For the third year running the BWA has been invited to exhibit members skills at the Reading Civic Centre, adjacent to the Hexagon Theatre.
The exhibition fills a series of glass cases as you will see from the report of last years event. These cases were put in place to show the Mayoral and other regalia and Reading treasures. However, as insurance costs became too high that these had to be put in safe keeping. So these are now used to hold a continuing exhibition with different participants each month.
The cases are at the back of the entrance lobby so they can be seen by the public
(and you!!) at any time when the Civic Centre is open.
The display covers the work of the follwoing members, ranging from Beginers to Masters, including:
-
Brian Attewell
-
Norman Button
-
Don Carnell
-
Jim Coombs
-
Steve Earis
-
Nigel Griffiths
-
Harvey Grimwood
-
Charlie Hayes
-
Brian Mills
-
Bill Riley
-
Terry Roden

BWA moves to new venue (again)
Unfortunately, the Hurst Village Hall has proved unsatisfactory for a number of reasons. Hence, once again the Committee has been faced with the problem of identifying a new venue that will enable us to meet at the same time on the same day of the month (7.00 to 10.00 on the evening of the third Wednesday in the month).
The club will now (from July 2008) meet at the premises of Trademark Conservatories which is situated in Wokingham. The location will be known to a number of members since the BWA has contributed to a number of craft shows held here.
For those who have not attended the 'shows' the address is:
TradeMark, Oaklands Park, Fishponds Road, Wokingham, Berkshire RG41 2FD
This is in the centre of Wokingham off Molly Millers Lane that joins the Barkham Road close to the station. The link below takes you to the contact page of the Trademark website, scroll down to find a map that provides more detail.

This change was announced at the meeting held on 18th June. However, there may be some members who were not present that day, so if you have a friend who may not know about this change - please pass the message on.
If you have any questions you can contact us by email

Turner of the Year and Competion Summary Results from 2007
The presentation of the Trophy for 'Turner of the Year' and awards to the winners of each class for the montly competition were made by the club Chairman Brian Attewell at the annual Christmas Party with Gary Rance, his son and Stuart King in atttendance.
Gary demonstrated the production of a hollow egg and a coloured spinning top accomanied by the usual good natured banter from the enthisiatic audience fortified by wine, mince pies and sausage rolls.
Charlie Hayes won the informal competition for a Christmas decoration or toy, with a pair of decorative baubles.
In addition to the various awards detailed below the ever improving standards of club members is indicated by the number of members who achieved promotion to a higher class as a result of their competition entries in 2007.

Trademark Christmas Show 2009
2009 saw another sucessful Christmas Craft fair, where BWA exhibited some of their work including items for sale. They were joined by 8 other Crafts, with a reasonable audience again attracted by 200 flyers that had been provided by Trademark.
BWA members in attendence were Harvey Grimwood, Bill Riley, Brian Mills, Bill Weedon, Brian Attewell, Gerry England, Ken Korp, Charlie Hayes, Alan Dobinson and Jim Coombs.
It was also a good social event with members able to see and discuss each others work, with a number of members who were not exhibiting coming in with their relations and friends to show what went on.
All agreed it was a sucess and look forward to next years event.
Trademark Christmas Show 2008
The 2008 Christmas Craft Fair was more successful than last year, mainly because the weather was good, while the advertising seemed to work well, particularly as many visitors came based on web site coverage.
Trademark provided 200 Flyers at no cost to the Club as usual which was much appreciated.
There were 9 BWA members and 11 other Crafts exhibiting, which gave a good mix to attract visitors to the showroom. All of the exhibitors want to return next year as it was considered to be a good social event for everybody as well as a Craft Fair. BWA members were able to exchange ideas about their work and it was interesting to see a greater proportion of each others work on display as this does not happen at the monthly meetings.
The Wokingham Times photographer came on the Saturday morning and took photos of the event. A copy of the group photo is shown here (copyright Wokingham Times). This shows some of the WBA turners who exhibited their work.
BWA Exhibitors (from L to R) Steve Cox, Bill Riley, Ken Corp, Harvey Grimwood, Jim Coombs, Charlie Hayes, Brian Attewell and Alan Dobinson
More than 10 people enquired about club membership and many were willing to attend a future Club night to see what goes on and to hopefully join.
It was a useful event for discussing aspects of the Club and in particular the heavy and outdated Video Equipment currently in use. A number of BWA members are also members of the Kennet Valley Woodturners(KWT) and have noted their recent acquisition of new video equipment which is far superior to the BWA equipment. It was agreed that a visit would be made to the KWT in the New Year to see their video set up.
Finally it is for discussion whether the BWA organises another Craft Fair in the Spring of 2009 in conjunction with Trademark with the support of Mark Ashwell. This would be perhaps a one day event on a Saturday only. When asked the majority of the other craft exhibitors were keen to participate if one was arranged.

' Keith Sherwood Trophy'
Towards the end of 2007 session a number of members suggested that the structure of the competition and the determination of the Turner of the Year be changed. The structure of the competition was debated at great length by the Committe and the only change deemed necessary was the level of points for promotion.
The alternative format suggested was that the Turner of the Year should be determined by ones peers from a single entry during the December meeting. Any entry from the previous 11 months competition being eligible. A simple ballot by the members in attendance would then determine the most popular item.
The committee, after a very long debate, decided that the current Turner of the Year competition should be continued in the same way as previously as this helped motivate the members to enter the competitions. However, the idea of a 'Popular Vote' was deemed to be a very good idea so it was decided that this should be used for an additional competition.
Space is too short to go into all the various ways of organising this that were discussed. In the end the Committee decided that for the 2008 session this new competition would be kept very simple. The Trophy will be known as the 'Keith Sherwood Trophy' and will be competed for on the basis of the following rules:
- A member who has submitted an item or items in any of the 11 monthly competitions held in 2008 may choose to enter ONE of his or her favourite pieces.
- The winner to be chosen during the December 2008 meeting by a simple ballot by the attendees, all members and visitors being eligible to vote, with one vote each.
As a note of clarifiaction there will be no differentiation between open and theme categoreis and none between the four levels of expertise (classes). No items other than those submitted during the competition period will be eligible for this or any further competition.
It is hoped that this will further encourage entries to the monthly competitions from our more 'sporadic' members.
The 2008 winner was Charlie Hayes. Entries included the following:
TradeMark Christmas Show 2007
The exhibition and sale of woodturning and other crafts held in conjunction with TradeMark Conservatories on 8 and 9th December proved as sucessful as in previous years, attracting a good audience in spite of the atrocious weather, with visitors taking the opportunity buy locally crafted presents including wooden bowls, platters, vases, candlesticks, boxes, clocks, pens, toadstools and wooden fruit.

Surrey Association of Woodturners - Open Day
This event, held at the Mytchett Centre, Farnborough on Sunday 28th October attracted a large and enthusiastic audience, enhanced no doubt by the dreadful weather, resulting in a major problem in finding somewhere to park. However, once within the centre it was well worth the efffort. In addition to the many competion entries (that included some prize winning efforts from BWA members) and exhibitions of others wood turnings several of our friends from the professional ranks were amongst the demonstrators, along with others whose work was perhaps less familiar to some of the BWA members who attended. The trade stands were also excellent, providing the complete range of products that any turner might need - wood, tools and chucks, finishes, alternatives to ivory, clock mechanisms and other embellishments as well as a tea room wherein to relax before braving the weather for the homward journey. The Surrey Association is to be congratulated on their efforts in running this.
