BWA moves to new venue (again)
Unfortunately, the Hurst Village Hall has proved unsatisfactory for a number of reasons. Hence, once again the Committee has been faced with the problem of identifying a new venue that will enable us to meet at the same time on the same day of the month (7.00 to 10.00 on the evening of the third Wednesday in the month).
The club will now (from July 2008) meet at the premises of Trademark Conservatories which is situated in Wokingham. The location will be known to a number of members since the BWA has contributed to a number of craft shows held here.
For those who have not attended the 'shows' the address is:
TradeMark, Oaklands Park, Fishponds Road, Wokingham, Berkshire RG41 2FD
This is in the centre of Wokingham off Molly Millers Lane that joins the Barkham Road close to the station. The link below takes you to the contact page of the Trademark website, scroll down to find a map that provides more detail.

This change was announced at the meeting held on 18th June. However, there may be some members who were not present that day, so if you have a friend who may not know about this change - please pass the message on.

' The President's Trophy'
Towards the end of 2007 session a number of members suggested that the structure of the competition and the determination of the Turner of the Year be changed. The structure of the competition was debated at great length by the Committe and the only change deemed necessary was the level of points for promotion.
The alternative format suggested was that the Turner of the Year should be determined by ones peers from a single entry during the December meeting. Any entry from the previous 11 months competition having won the class bring eligible. A simple ballot by the members in attendance would then determine the most popular item.
The committee, after a very long debate, decided that the current Turner of the Year competition should be continued in the same way as previously as this helped motivate the members to enter the competitions. However, the idea of a 'Popular Vote' was deemed to be a very good idea so it was decided that this should be used for an additional competition.
Space is too short to go into all the various ways of organising this that were discussed. In the end the Committee decided that for the 2008 session this new competition would be kept very simple. The Trophy will be known as the 'President's Trophy' and will be competed for on the basis of the following rules:
- A member who has submitted an item or items in any of the 11 monthly competitions held in 2008 may choose ONE of his or her favourite pieces to enter for the President's Trophy.
- The winner to be chosen during the December 2008 meeting by a simple ballot by the attendees, all members and visitors being eligible to vote, with one vote each.
As a note of clarifiaction there will be no differentiation between open and theme categoreis and none between the four levels of expertise (classes). No items other than those submitted during the competition period will be eligible for this or any further competition.
It is hoped that this will further encourage entries to the monthly competitions from our more 'sporadic' members.

Dates for the Diary
Exhibition of the Worshipal Company of Turners - The first Wizardry in Wood exhibition was held in 2004. This was so successful that a much larger event is being held in June 2008 in the splendid Hall of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters in Throgmorton Avenue, London EC2 from June 4-6.

Turner of the Year and Competion Summary Results from 2007
The presentation of the Trophy for 'Turner of the Year' and awards to the winners of each class for the montly competition were made by the club Chairman Brian Attewell at the annual Christmas Party with Gary Rance, his son and Stuart King in atttendance.
Gary demonstrated the production of a hollow egg and a coloured spinning top accomanied by the usual good natured banter from the enthisiatic audience fortified by wine, mince pies and sausage rolls.
Charlie Hayes won the informal competition for a Christmas decoration or toy, with a pair of decorative baubles.
In addition to the various awards detailed below the ever improving standards of club members is indicated by the number of members who achieved promotion to a higher class as a result of their competition entries in 2007.

TradeMark Christmas Show 2007
The exhibition and sale of woodturning and other crafts held in conjunction with TradeMark Conservatories on 8 and 9th December proved as sucessful as in previous years, attracting a good audience in spite of the atrocious weather, with visitors taking the opportunity buy locally crafted presents including wooden bowls, platters, vases, candlesticks, boxes, clocks, pens, toadstools and wooden fruit.

Surrey Association of Woodturners - Open Day
This event, held at the Mytchett Centre, Farnborough on Sunday 28th October attracted a large and enthusiastic audience, enhanced no doubt by the dreadful weather, resulting in a major problem in finding somewhere to park. However, once within the centre it was well worth the efffort. In addition to the many competion entries (that included some prize winning efforts from BWA members) and exhibitions of others wood turnings several of our friends from the professional ranks were amongst the demonstrators, along with others whose work was perhaps less familiar to some of the BWA members who attended. The trade stands were also excellent, providing the complete range of products that any turner might need - wood, tools and chucks, finishes, alternatives to ivory, clock mechanisms and other embellishments as well as a tea room wherein to relax before braving the weather for the homward journey. The Surrey Association is to be congratulated on their efforts in running this.
